Please recommend a persimmon with showy fruit; native preferably. Thanks!
Diospyros virginiana is the common persimmon that is native and grows in zones 4 to 9. It is not commonly available commercially, but can be found in specialty nurseries. It is very durable but does not have the most attractive fruit. There are cultivars with improved fruit, but that is not "native".The focus of the common persimmon is the fruit and 'Early Golden' is the standard for early ripening fruit.
The Japanese persimmon, Diospyros kaki, has more attractive fruit, but is not as duarable being hardy in zones 7 to 9. 'Fuyu' is most popular according to Michael Dirr in Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, but lists twelve more cultivars with varying color and quality of fruit.
