Q

I live in Philly and have been working on a rooftop garden for a couple years.

I am looking for a fast-growing vine that will grow up a privacy fence that is in full sun. It will be planted in a large container. Any recommendations?

Answer

Fast growing vines with showy flowers are Morning glories and moonflowers (which blooms at night). Plant them in May. They grow quickly to provide cover during the summer but wil not return next year. If you don't care about flowers but would like more cover, Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) will climb up your privacy fence. The Boston Ivy may live over the winter if the container is large enough and is insulated.
