Answer

The Sweetbay Magnolia is said to be hardy in zones 5 - 10; however, in the Philadelphia area, it is set back severely in bad winters and will suffer limb breakage from heavy snow. It will recover from most damage but may require some creative pruning to restore its shape. It is evergreen.
