Q

I am looking for a tall grass

similar to that on the S.E. corner of the property that houses the University of Pennsylvania Museum at 3260 South Street. I need a grass that grows about 20"-28" high in a south-facing area that can withstand heat.

Answer

If you are interested in a grass that is similar to the one you refer to send a photo so it can be identified. There is a dwarf fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides `Hameln') which is a dwarf form of warm season fountain grass that grows about 2' tall and does well in full sun. The grass emerges in the spring and is attractive from June until February or March when it needs cutting back. In late summer fountain grass is covered with buff-colored flower heads with a pink cast. If you prefer a taller grass choose Pennisetum alopecuroides which is larger and grows to 36" tall.
