In Philadelphia, the best time to prune fig trees is in late winter or early spring before growth begins.  Fig trees produce good crops with light thinning and trimming.  Is your fig a bush or a tree?  Generally speaking, bush forms are easier to protect in cool climates, which is what we have here.  But you can rest for the time being.
