Q

Can you recommend a suitable ornamental grass?

I recently exposed a 4ā€™ x 3ā€™ section of sidewalk on the west side of my house in Philadelphia. The section is right above a sewer inlet. This site gets full afternoon sun. Iā€™m looking for a recommendation on a suitable ornamental grass that is dense and grows to a height of 3-4 feet. My initial thoughts - switch or Indian grass ā€“ what do you think?

Answer

Both grasses you suggest are fine.  Here are two more to consider: Carex pansa--forms a tight mat and spreads (not a clumping form) or consider Schizachyrium scoparium-- Little Bluestem--pretty, a clump form.
