Q

Camellias for northen climates?

I live in Zone 6 (in NY), about an hour drive from Philadelphia. I was born in the south and I would love to find a camellia that will thrive in Zone 6. All the information on the web has general suggestions about hardy species, but nothing concrete. Where can I find information and purchase some hardy camellias? Price and effort to maintain it are not a question.

Answer

Anne Raver wrote an excellent article in the New York Times on January 16, 2013 titled "Ready for Their Cold Snap" about hardier varieties of camellias. In fact, she interviewed local plantsman Charles Cresson, who has been growing hardy camellias for years. The article contains plenty of information on specific cultivars to grow and where to purchase them.

In addition, you may want to look at this book in our library:

Beyond the camellia belt :breeding, propagating, and growing cold-hardy camellias by William L. Ackerman. As a PHS member, you may borrow this book. We loan books to our members through the mail.
