How do I prune Hydrangea?

Do I prune dead blooms that are still on plants from last year that never dropped off ? Or do I leave them alone? How do I cut off the dead blooms so I don't disturb the new buds that will bloom this spring? (3/4/2011)

Answer

You can cut off the dead blooms just below the dead part.  It is hard to know what will happen to hydrangea blooms this year as it has been so cold and windy, which kills many of the buds.  The best time to prune hydrangeas in general, other than to just remove dead blooms, is within a month after blooming.
