What trees and shrubs should I plant in my wet back yard?

I am about to landscape a barren piece of back yard in Ridley Township, Delaware County, PA that has swampy soil when it rains. What kind of inexpensive trees and shrubs can I plant here?

Answer

For shrubs, try shrub dogwoods like Cornus sericea or Cornus alba, Clethra alnifolia (Sweet Pepperbush), Lindera benzoin (Spice Bush) Rhododendron arborescens (Sweet Azalea) or Rosa palustrus (Swamp Rose).  For trees try Magnolia virginiana, Acer rubrum (Swamp or Red Maple), Amelanchier arborea (Service Berry) or Thuja occidentalis (American Arbor Vitae).  To learn about the particulars of these plants, Google the Latin names that I have given you above.  Some are more sun tolerant and some are more shade tolerant.
