What can I do about fruit flies from the vegetables I’m picking from our garden?
We wash everything but they are still a problem.
Answer
Fruit flies become common in late summer, when tomatoes and fruits begin to ferment. You need to wash all areas that might have veggie or fruit juice residue with a vinegar/water solution. The University of Nebraska – Lincoln extension service has a good website about flies and their control. See also the Penn State Factsheet on fruit flies (also called vinegar flies).
