During the recent storm, in the news they mentioned that one of the historic trees that William Penn planted was knocked down.
Do you know where the tree was located and what kind of tree it was?

We have an update to your question. We've learned that at least 2 Big Trees (historic trees) were damaged from the storm. According to the PA Big Trees web site news post dated November 9, 2012:
"Hurricane Sandy has taken two trees from our list that I know about. One was a Penn Charter Oak on Grassmere in Bala Cynwyd. The other was the State champion Pin oak up at Silver Lake Natural area. Sorry to see those two go."
The Bala Cynwyd tree was listed in Wertz's book, Penn's Woods 1682-1982 : the oldest trees in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Eastern Shore, Maryland (book from PHS McLean Library). I've uploaded a scan from that book, describing the tree.
