My rubber plant only has leaves on the top and none will grow on the bottom. What do I need to do to get more leaves to grow?

Answer

Maria, unfortunately it is very difficult to get rubber trees to get new growth from the bottom.  It usually comes from the plant sending up another shoot from the root.  This type of top-only growth usually comes from the plant not being very happy---too dry, not enough light, not enough humidity in the air, etc.  You might find it interesting to do a process called air layering.  A good way to learn how to do this is to "Google" how do I air layer a rubber tree.  The Garden Guides web site is very good.  Then, after roots have started to grow in the air-layered part, you can cut the stalk down to about 8 inches.  Often it will send out new growth from below this point.  During the whole process be sure to keep the plant well-watered (but not too much!) and fertilized.  Be cautious about the sap.  It is sticky and some people are allergic to it.  Thanks for contacting us and feel free to keep in touch with another question.  ep
