Pruning clematis

To Patricia Schreiber re today's article in Phl Inquirer: My clematis has 7 sepals. What pruning advice?

Answer

The answer depends on the blooming time of your clematis.  If is is an early bloomer, and may already have bloomed, it is either in Group 1 or Group 2, which bloom on "old wood", that is  on wood that was produced the year before.  Those clematis should be pruned in the late winter before new growth and budding.  If the clematis blooms in late summer or fall, it is a Group 3 clematis, and should be pruned after blooming.  For more detailed information check out this website:
