Can you suggest a replacement tree? I lost my Magnolia tree this year after the cold winter.

I found a tree that I really like but it only grows 10-15 feet (Orido Nishiki Japanese maple). I am looking for something similar that will grow 15-25 feet. I live in the city and it will be living in a small alley street in Philadelphia. Thanks for any suggestions! Jane

Answer

Dear Jane:  Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is a taller Japanese maple with good color.  Also, it is readily available in the market.  Another variety that is also a little taller than the Orido Nishiki is Acer palmatum 'lSango-kaku'.  However it is harder to find  If you can find a source for it, it has beautiful bark and pretty foliage.
