Are Latin names out of vogue?
A knowledgeable gardening acquaintance stated that "latin names are no longer given to new plants and latin names are out of vogue" . Is this true? My understanding is that Latin is the universal way to communicate with gardeners in other regions and countries.
Answer
Latin names are not out of vogue, as they are the best way the name that correctly identifies a plant. Common names are easier to use, but do not have the accuracy of Latin names. Since common names are easier to use and remember, they seem to be appearing more and more, without including the Latin name. When identification of a plant is important, both the Latin and common names should be given.
