I'm trying to find the plant name of one of your 2015 blue ribbon winners. I'm thinking it's Scadoxus, not sure.

It's grown like an amaryllis in a pot and was with the amarylis on the other side of the display. It is an double bloom orange flower and in a clay pot. What is the name of this plant. Thank you!

Answer

I was just about to write that we have thousands of entries in the Horticourt, which makes an ID like this very difficult. However, I mentioned your query to someone who did alot of photography in the Horticourt and was familiar with the entries.

She wondered if you meant the Scadoxus on exhibit. Take a look at the attached photo I uploaded to the answer to this question. This plant was entered as follows:

Class 2086 PHS ID 11219

Scadoxus puniceus

Lynn Cook and Troy Ray

Liberty Bell Gesneriad Society

First Prize, March 1, 2015

We always suggest that flower show visitors come with pencil and notepad or smartphone to jot down the name of the plant they are interested in, and to take photos. In the Horticourt, it's really useful to take a photo of the card that accompanies the plant.

Hope this is the plant you saw.
