Trying to identify a fungus that appears as small masses poking through the soil that look like small potatoes

usually about 4 inches across but occasionally much larger. If I catch them before they erupt, they're heavy and solid. Once they pop, all that's left is the outer casing which has the consistency of tough leather or hard plastic depending on how long it's been sitting.
