What is the sap oozing from my weeping cherry tree?

I have a weeping cherry tree on my property that was planted approximately 22 years ago. There is a molassas type sap oozing from the trunk. Is this a serious problem and what can I do to save the tree and eradicate the problem?

Answer

This is a common tendency for cherry trees and is called gummosis. If the tree looks healthy, gummosis is not a threatening condition. Injured bark will ooze sap and if the tree is in wet soil for long periods of time, it will ooze.
