When can I transplant my fig tree?

I have a 5 by 5 ft fig "bush" that is planted over a septic area. Could you give me advice regarding when and how I should move it? Monroeville, NJ 08343

Answer

It would be better to move it in the spring, very early (after it starts budding) but before the leaves come out.  This fall, however, prune it pretty well, about one fourth of the way back.  Be careful where you plant it so it is out of wind.  Try to replicate the soil conditions where it is growing now.
