How large do Japanese maple seedlings need to be before I can plant them in the ground?

I am growing Japanese maples in pots from seedlings that fell from the tree in my yard. How large should they be before planting in the ground?

Answer

You can plant them as soon as they have firm roots. You know when they have firm roots when you tug on them and they don't immediately jump out of the pot. Japanese maples do best in shade or semi-shade, I don't recommend planting them in full sun as they will be stressed.
