How long can you store tulip bulbs without planting?

I have bulbs that were given to me in the Spring of 2010 that have been stored in my garage. I would like to plant them in a new raised bed that my husband is building, but I am wondering if they have been out of the ground too long.

Answer

Generally these bulbs will not bloom well and aren’t worth the effort.  It would be much better to buy new ones in the fall and plant them then.  Be sure the bulbs are nice and firm.  A general garden fertilizer also helps.  ep
