How often should I water my palm plant?

Also, it gets brown on the tips of the leaves sometimes. Can you tell me what causes this?

Answer

Water when the top of the soil is dry. Browning of the tips can be caused by a number of factors: chlorine in the water, dry air, salt buildup in the soil from fertilizer, overwatering, letting it get too dry. I would suspect chlorine in the water first. Try letting the water sit for a few days so the chlorine dissipates or try using rain water. If it is very dry where the plant is located, move the plant to a location where it is more humid, or increase the humidity. Also, dry hot or cold air blowing on the plant could cause the problem.
