Can you recommend some basic books for a beginning gardener?

I just moved to the Philadelphia area and would like to learn how to start a garden.

Answer

It’s always wonderful to start a garden.  You asked for book suggestions, and here are several that would be very helpful to get you started.

Two  books by Ilene Sternberg:

Two books by Stephanie Cohen

These books are available in the PHS McLean Library.  If you are a member, you may borrow these books.  The books also should be widely available in libraries in the area. (For a list of local libraries holding these titles, search WorldCat.org. Enter title of book in search box. To find a nearby location of a library holding that copy, enter your zip code in the box titled "Enter your location." I think you will find them fun to read, as well as being  very useful to you.

Also, below I included a link to our subject guide on Basic Horticulture as well as our subject guide called Philadelphia Gardening Guide -- Use this guide to learn where to buy plants, what to grow, how to connect with other gardeners in the Philadelphia area.

Good luck!
