Is it effective and safe to use rubber mulch in planting areas and around trees?

Answer

The general policy of the horticultural society is to be as organic as possible.  Therefore rubber mulch poses some questions.  First of all, although it is recycling tires, they don't break down into a form that plants can use.  They also remain in the soil in their undecomposed state for a very long time. Since they don't actually benefit the soil in an organic way it would be better to use an organic mulch.
