What kind of sand should I use to work into my clay soil to improve drainage?

I have added compost, rotted manure and leaf mold to the clay soil in my garden and now I want to add sand, to imrpove drainage. What kind of sand should be added? Is there a type of sand that I shouldn't add?

Answer

Dear Helene:  To improve your soil you should use a coarse sand.  There is even a product on the market that is gardeners sand, but any coarse sand will work.  If you use too fine a sand, you will compound your poor soil problem!
