How should Sweet Autumn Clematis be pruned after flowering stops?

Answer

Sweet Autumn Clematis blooms on the current season's growth.  It's easily and best pruned in late spring.  Cut last year's stems back 6" to 12 " above the ground. Don't worry - by midseason it will be covering the fence or trellis again, ready to bloom in September.
