What is a good hardy fall/winter plant for shallow planters in a spot that only gets partial sun?
I have two stone planters, not more than a foot deep, on my front step, which faces northwest and is partly shaded by other landscaping. I'd like to know what to plant there that would do well, require relatively little maintenance, and if possible also have a little bit of height.
Answer
Grasses in the center of the container surrounded by the darker colored flowering cabbage are very effective. The flowering cabbage that is whitish in the center tends to get brown and not hold up as well in the winter. The pansies that are being sold now also add winter interest for a while but soon die down, aren't usually that lovely in the spring, when I plant pansies if I want pansies! ep
