My tree is pushing up the concrete around on my and my neighbors property.

If I have the concrete blocks replaced, can I have the tree roots shaved down to stop them from pushing up the concrete again? I don't want to lose the tree but want to be a good neighbor.

Answer

The tree will continue to lift the concrete and shaving the roots will only hurt the tree if not kill it. Some municipalities have been using asphalt for sidewalks as it has some give and can rise and/or fall with the roots, however this method is best used where the trees are young and less established. It is a common problem with old street trees. Some people paint the raised concrete with red paint where it would create a tripping hazzard. You could remove the roots in the smallest possible area, put a metal barrier in and reestablish the sidewalk but you may loose the tree as a result.
