My rubber tree was full of healthy leaves at one point, then all of the leaves fell of and there was only a stick of a plant.
Just when I was about to throw away the stick, leaves started growing from the very top and one little branch at the very bottom of the stick. I dont really like the look of a bare stick with leaves on top. Is there a way I can propagate the top and still grow from the bottom section to eliminate the bare stem in the middle?
Answer
There is a method called air layering where you cut off a portion of the top of the plant that is living, make a notch in the live part growing at the bottom and attach the top portion to the bottom part. We've embedded a YouTube video from the University of Illinois Extension service called "Air Layering Houseplants."
Another alternative would be to find a new plant that has the look that you like.
