How can I keep the squirrels from digging my plants out of my window boxes

Answer

Dear Margaret,

This is a real challenge, especially if your window boxes are near trees that the squirrels can use as jumping off points.  If the window boxes are deep enough to install a one inch wire mesh about two inches below the surface, this will help to impede squirrels from digging. Some people try spraying with a squirrel inhibitor or putting cayenne pepper on the soil, but these deterrents don't often work.  Another approach might be to entice the squirrels with peanuts if there is a place to put them that isn't close to the window boxes where the squirrels conceivably could take a peanut and then plant it in the window box! Good luck with this, and I hope your window boxes will be beautiful this coming season.
