Suitable perennials for containers in full sun?

The pots are on a balcony facing west. Have sun from 2 until setting.

Answer

What a nice opportunity for you!  However, before you choose the plants, you might want to give some thought to color, height, period of bloom.  There is abundant information both online and in library books.  Here are some suggestions that I have used in containers on a sunny terrace:

   roses (dwarf varieties)

   cone flowers

agastache (hyssop - many lovely varieties)

   geums

   lilies (particularly daylilies)

   huecheras

   oxalis

   sedums

Be sure to check that the particular varieties you choose are perennial in our zones 5 - 7.  You might also want to combine perennial plants in contaners with annuals for spectacular displays.  The rule of thumb for creating effective combinations is thrillers (tall), spillers (trailing), and fillers (for  filling in).  Have fun.
