I am researching the bee expert Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth, 1810-1895.

He wrote A practical treatise on the hive and honey-bee. Can you verify that he was awarded a prize from PHS in the 1850 and 1851?

Answer

We consulted our minute books for the years 1850 and 1851. These hand-written books are too delicate to copy.

1850, list of premiums awarded at the 22nd exhibition (PHS founded in 1827), September 18th 1850. For honey, the best display went to Jeremiah Comfort. Special Premium for part of a box of superior Honey, one dollar, to Rev. L. L. Langstroth.

1851 minutes reporting premiums awarded at the 23rd exhibition: [p.85]

The committee no. 4 on vegetables ....award premiums for best display of honey to L. L. Langstroth

So, in answer to your question, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society awarded prizes to Langstroth.

By the way, Langstroth's book, A practical treatise on the hive and honey-bee  (1857) is available digitally on the Internet Archive. The print copy may be consulted here in the PHS McLean Library.
