Can you suggest a good variety of flowering cherry tree?

Would like to plant a cherry tree in someone's memory in Center City, Philadelphia. I turn to you for suggestions for the best variety. We want a large tree with fruit no larger than 1/2", that is long lasting (though I know cherries are not the most long living trees around!)

Answer

What a nice tribute.  Here are some suggestions:

Yoshino – height – 20’-30’, spread- 20’-30’; great profusion of single white blossoms, early

Akebono – height -25’-30’; spread – 40’;   single, pale pink blossoms, early

                Kwanzan – height – 30’, spread – 20’;  clear pink double blossoms, mid-late

These trees are among those at the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C.  Most of these have life spans of about 20 – 25 years.

Other possibilities to consider:

                Fugenzo – height – 30’, spread – 25’; double, rosy pink blossoms

Shirofugen – height – 20’, spread – 20’; double white, but aging to pink blossoms, very late

                Mt. Fuji – height – 20’, spread-25’; semi-double white, early

Sakura – many varieties, the Edohigan variety is long-lived.  For more information about these trees:
