My weeping cherry is only 5 yrs. old. I live in Maryland where temperaturs fluctuate.

The tree is splitting and it looks like an open infected wound. My soil is not great and maybe I have over watered it a times. It has sign of big sap formations on the trunk as well. What can I do?

Answer

Cherries in the mid-Atlantic area are occasionally damaged by low winter temperatures creating longitudinal cracks on the southern or western side of the trunk where they are exposed to extreme sun and wind. The infected wound could be bacterial or fungal. You need to have a certified tree surgeon see the tree to determine the proper treatment.
