I am doing research on the Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950) mural that was on PHS's third Horticultural Hall built in the 1890s.

This was a 308-foot long mural originally painted beneath the eaves of the Society's Frank Miles Day building on Broad Street built in 1896. From extensive published descriptions, it seems to have been a major piece in the mural genre. But I find no images. Can you help?

Answer

I am attaching some files which may be of help. The attached “pullout illustration” is a brochure with a rendering of the murals, although they may not be the final images. We don’t have clear photos of the murals, since the murals were placed below the eaves of the building.

A brief history of this building appeared in this blog post.

A contemporary account appeared in Harper's Weekly.
