Can you provide/where can I find instructions and preferred materials for building a self watering planter?

I attended the container gardening presentation at the flower show and would like to grow vegetables in containers on my deck this summer. As it is a very sunny area, I would like to build self watering containers so I don't have to water every day. I've purchased session containers that are 12" high and 20 " across and looked at DIY self watering container information on the internet, but would like to be certain that I am selection the right materials for functionality and longevity, particularly to create and hold up the petition between the water and the soil and to hold and fill the wicking basket.
