I have a 13-year-old dwarf weeping cherry tree that has bloomed every year, leafed out and looked beautiful.

I live in Omaha and the tree was full of buds before we had a cold snap. It did not flower out. The buds are now dry and can be crumbled up when picked off. Is my tree dead?

Answer

Dear Gardener:  I suspect the cold took its toll on the flowers, but that the tree should be fine.  I hope you are now beginning to see some sign of leaf lifel   Cherries are fairly hardy trees.  You are within the hardiness zone for cherries in Omaha, but just on the edge.  Cherries in general are hardy to zone 5 and you are zone 5a.
