My magnolia tree looks like it died. It was so beautiful and at least 40 years old. What could have killed it?

all the leaves are brown.

Answer

Dear Pam:  So sad to have a treasured tree die.  Almost like loosing a pet!  This was a very difficult winter, but I suspect the cause was something else, maybe even old age!   Without seeing the tree, I cannot even guess.  Maybe a good arborist could tell you the cause.  An arborist can look for borer holes, look for significant water changes and other causes of death.
