Where do I plant with this weed barrier?
We have an "island" bed in the front yard that has dirt topped with mulch. When I went to plant in it for the first time since we bought the house, I found out that there is only about 6 inches of top soil on top of a cloth weed barrier. It wasn't deep eough to properly plant, and support, my hostas... so I cut through the weed barrier. Beneathe the barrier is nearly pure clay. How do I plant here? In a setup like this, is the soil on top of the weed barrier intended to be planted in?
Answer
You can try mixing the clay with the topsoil and adding some potting soil to lighten it up. The hostas should be able to survive but they do not like full sun so should be planted in the shade.
