How do I keep my orchids alive so that they can rebloom?
Answer
One of the most common mistakes with made orchid care is overwatering. The soil should be kept on the dry side; watering once a week should be sufficient. I always touch the soil of my orchids to be sure that it is fairly dry before I water. Orchids need very good drainage as well. Do not let the plants stand in water. In addition, I fertilize with a soluable orchid fertilizer at each watering. Orchid fertilizers are widely available in garden centers and instructions for how to use them are included. Are your orchids in the correct location? They need adequate light, but it should be filtered so they are not in constant sun or in too hot an environment. Every once in a while I give the plants a shower in the tub or in the shower to clean off the foliage. I cut the flower stalks back a bit after all of the blooms have faded.
