How do I save a rabbit foot fern torn to a hundred pieces by my dog?

There are a hundred different pieces of rhizome with fern leaves hanging off, none with roots attached. The plant filled a 6" clay pot to give an idea of size. It was about a 12 year old plant.

Answer

Oh, so sorry that your pooch tore up your rabbit foot fern, but no worries.  You can save the plant and start new plants by propagating with rhizome clump cuttings.  Cleanly cut clumps of rhizomes from the damaged plant, and place in a pot or several pots, if you want to start new plants.  Use fresh soil.   Water thoroughly and place the pot(s) in indirect light. Water when the soil feels slightly dry, but do not over water or the rhizomes will rot. Mist the newly potted fern daily.  I'm sure you already know this.  Offer the pooch another type of treat.
