What fall garden plants are best for zone 6b?
Answer
Many books in our library will have information on plants with Fall interest. We looked at Andrew Keys' book, Growing the Northeast garden, Timber Press, 2015. This is an eBook available to PHS members. To access this book to read online or to download, enter your PHS membership number in the login screen.
Take a look at the chapter on Late Summer and Fall recommended plants - trees, shrubs, vines and perennials. Some standouts include:
Maples (Acer species)
Beautyberry (Callicarpa species)
Some perennials include
Aster species and cultivars
Chrysanthemums
Sunflowers
Look for plants hardy in your zone and look at other factors such as light and soil requirements.
You can also search for plants in your hardiness zone in our database of Gold Medal Plant award winners.
Symphyotrichum oblongifolium ‘October Skies’ (October Skies Aster) is a Fall bloomer and Virburnum nudum 'Winterthur' gets brilliant red-orange color in the Fall. Many Gold Medal plants can be purchased at local nurseries, such as Mostardis in Newtown Square, Pa.
