I am trying to identify deciduous trees to add to our Thomas Sears landscaped property in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

In particular I seek a smaller tree where the branches grow upward since it is to go in a narrow area. Do you have any thoughts?

Answer

The most upright goiwing tree is the Zelkovia serrata. Perhaps you can locate a cultivar that remains on the small side. Many trees have columnar cultivars that will meet your space requirements.

I would look into maples, serviceberry, Cercidium, Red Bud, magnolia, ornamental apples, flowering cherry, stewartia and dogwoods. These are all smaller trees that may have columnar cultivars.
