Someone spray painted on my trees. How can I remove the paint?

Apparently graffiti isn't only for buildings. I'm not sure if it is latex or oil-based paint.

Answer

Paint on the bark of trees can damage the tree and even kill it. Oil-based paints are more damaging than water based paints. Trees with thin barks are also more susceptible to damage than heavily barked trees.

The sooner the paint is removed the better off the tree will be. Use a citrus-based degreaser that is available in most retail stores. The tree may be washed off in 20 minutes if the paint is still fresh. Otherwise, wait for a couple of hours before washing the tree. A second treatment may be needed in some cases.
