With the warmer weather we have had, some of my bulbs are coming up.
Should I put fertilizer around them? What should I do to protect them with colder weather coming?
Answer
The weather has been mild this fall and so far into winter on the East Coast. Many bulbs are coming up and are of concern to gardeners. Do not fertilize them until spring. You do not want to encourage additional growth. Most bulbs will not be harmed by coming up early as long as the flowers do not show. Straw or dried leaves will give them some protection for the cold weather. Remove the straw or dried leaves as soon as it starts to warm up.
