I have a question about my tricolor Moses in a boat plant. (Tradescantia spp.)

I noticed most of the pictures of this plant are spiky and the plant stays up right by itself. Mine looks more like a vine now. Why is that?

Answer

Dear Botanist:  Without a picture or not seeing the plant, it is hard to help you, but I will try!  Sometimes the plant is a ground cover type plant that has spiky foliage.  However, there are forms of Moses in a Boat (Tradescantia is the botanical first name) that are very vine-like and can be grow on frames or forms.  It sounds like you have the vine-like kind of Moses in a Boat.  If you Google "Vining Tradescantia" you may see pictures of your plant.
