How can I take care of the stream in my back yard?

I already use organic methods and have increased native plants. I'm not sure if it is better to remove plants growing in the stream that might obstruct flow, or leave them to prevent erosion. Is it better to keep the banks manicured or think of it more as wildlife habitat and use native plants to build a buffer.

Answer

Brandy, You are to be complimented for your consideration of your surroundings. If the plants in the stream don't seem to be non native, and aren't taking over the stream and obstructing the flow it is better to leave them as they provide habitat for various types of creatures, as well as maybe a food source.   The stream banks, known as riparian buffers, are best also with native buffers. Manicured edges often encourage erosion in the long run, and provide no benefit to the environment. ep
