Is there a safe way to get rid of poison ivy?

Gemma, poison ivy is indeed very difficult. In all seriousness, supposedly one of the best organic ways to control it is to have goats feed on it. It doesn't bother them in any way. However, other than that it takes diligence. It is a good time to start control now. Someone could chop at the vine with an axe, not damaging the tree, about one foot above the ground. Leave the upper vine alone as it still has oils. Then paint on the cut stem undiluted Round Up or a weed and brush killer. If it starts to leaf out spray the new leaves with Round Up or the Brush Killer at the prescribed strength. These herbicides are only taken in through the vascular system or the leaves, not through the roots, stems or in the ground. It takes diligence. Best of luck. ep
