How can I rejuvenate my aging azaleas? My small inner suburban lot is getting shadier by the year. should I take off top growth and suckers?

I seem to be cutting out more dead wood every year

Answer

Dear Gardener:  Leave in the suckers and cut out all the dead.  If you are left with some long gangly branches that make the plant look awkward, they can be cut back hard and the plant will branch out from their base.  Do all this immediately after bloom and maybe add good garden compost or some Hollytone to give the plants a little boost.
