What trees are indigenous (native) to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania? I need trees to use for privacy as well as plantings to attract song birds.
Answer
Attached is a scan from Donald Leopold's book, Native Plants of the Northeast.
It is a list of plants with fruits that attract birds.
Attached also is a list of mid-Atlantic native trees and shrubs with wildlife value -- this list is from Doug Tallamy's book, Bringing nature home. You may also want to look at Rick Darke's and Doug Tallamy's book, The living landscape : designing for beauty and biodiversity in the home garden. PHS members may borrow these books. We have them in print and some of them in eBook format. Or, if you are not a member, you may be able to get them at your local library or via Interlibrary Loan.
Stroudsburg is in Monroe County. You can access the PA Flora database online and download a list of all the native plants of Monroe County. However, you may find that that is information overload, as nearly 1500 species are listed. Your best course of action is to talk to someone at a local nursery. If you don't know any, contact the Monroe County Master Gardeners. Contact info here.

Hope this helps.
